2 Mistakes To Avoid When Choosing A Gun Safe For Your Home

Whether you have recently purchased a gun or already have one or more firearms at home, you may have decided that you need to take steps to ensure that they are locked up and safely stowed away. However, when it comes time to choose a safe for your home, make sure that you avoid the following mistakes which could lead to problems in the future.

1.  Selecting a Safe That Requires a Key

One of the first things you should examine when selecting a gun safe is the locking mechanism. While looking at the various models, you may feel that a lock which requires a key would be the simplest and safest option. After all, you can simply keep your key on your keychain or hidden away safely in a drawer, right?

While a lock-and-key mechanism may seem to be the safest solution, there are a couple of problems with it. First, you may forget your keychain or accidentally leave the key out on your dresser one day. If you have children at home, they may see the key and allow their curiosity to take over, opening the safe and deciding to play with the guns.

Second, if you lose your key, you would have no way to open the safe. You would then have to hire a locksmith to get into the safe and make a new key for you.

Instead of a lock requiring a key, look at models featuring a combination lock. Or, if you want extra security, choose a safe with a biometric system that requires a hand or fingerprint to open.

2.  Choosing the Wrong Weight for Your Safe

Another mistake you want to avoid when buying a gun safe is choosing the wrong weight. You may decide to go with a smaller safe that is light enough to make it portable. However, if the safe is too light, it could easily be carried away if your home were broken into.

Conversely, you also do not want a safe that is too heavy. Not only would the weight make it extremely difficult to move, but it could also damage the floor underneath. Speak with a business representative who is knowledgeable about safes to determine which weight is right for you.

Avoiding the above mistakes when choosing a safe for your guns can help prevent future problems. For more information about finding a model that is ideal for you and your household's needs, contact a business that offers gun safes for sale.
